Abstract
384,177. Welding; pipe-end closing. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Compagnie des Surchaffeurs Soc. Anon. ; 3, Rue la B÷etie, Paris.) April 30, 1932, No. 12484. [Class 83 (iv).] The ends of two tubes 1, 2 disposed one within the other are jointed by heating the tube ends and then welding them together preferably by means of an anvil 4 and a pair of swages or dies 5. The inner tube is forced against the anvil, which may be rotatable or stationary whereupon the end thereof is expanded, and at the same time the swages, which are reciprocated radially of and also revolve about the tube end 1, are set in operation and serve first to contract the tube end 1 into contact with the tube 2 and then to effect the welding operation. Fig. 7 shows the finished joint after the removal of the annular rib 7 formed during the forging operation. The welding may be effected by pressure instead of by hammering, and only one of the tube ends need be expanded or contracted. The end of one or both tubes may be thickened, as shown for example in Fig. 11, prior to forging.
