729,989. Joining tubes to plates. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 14, 1953 [Aug. 15, 1952], No. 22432/53. Class 99 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A method of manufacturing tubular heat exchangers includes forming each of a number of tubes with end portions of different diameter, fitting the ends into tube seats of appropriate diameter formed in spaced heat exchanger walls, expanding the larger end of the tube in its seat to form a joint and then expanding the smaller end of the tube in its seat to form a joint by an expanding operation causing tube metal flow away from the expanded larger end. A tube 10 with a smaller swaged down end 12 is fitted between spaced heat exchanger walls 14, 16 with the larger end 13 in a tube seat 18 in the wall 14 and the smaller end 12 in a smaller tube seat 20 in the wall 16. A ball drift expander 26 is then pushed through the larger end 13 from the outer end inwardly to expand it in its seat. The expander 26 is withdrawn and a smaller ball drift expander 34 is pulled through the tube to expand the smaller end 12 in its seat outwardly to the tube end. A large number of closely spaced tubes may be thus secured between the walls 14 and 16.
