Abstract

[Also in Group XIII] In a method of making a heat exchanger, an initially flat element is folded upon itself (Fig. 4) and is then coiled' to a spiral form (Fig. 5) so that the two ends d of the element lie outside the coil for subsequent connection to headers, the element being formed by welding together two metal sheets of predetermined positions, by rolling, the sheets being subsequently dilated at intermediate positions by fluid pressure, to provide a plurality of tubes b (Fig. 3) formed by the dilated parts of the sheets and separated by integral webs c formed by the welded parts of the sheets.
