Abstract

363,574. Making tubes. HARDMEYER, R., Kunsnacht, near Z³rich, Switzerland. March 21, 1931, No. 8782. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Corrugating.-Corrugations are formed between dies, one by one, on the enlarged end portion of cop tubes by exerting axial pressure, the corrugations already formed being supported by a core. The first corrugation is formed between a die 3 having a recess to seat the shouldered portion of the work, and a recess 16 co-operating with a recess 15 in a die 7 into which the metal expands, preferably with a thickening of the wall. A mandrel 8 is carried within the tube during the operation. The corrugation so formed is then supported between a block 3<1> and an annular member 4, the latter having a recess co-operating with the recess 15 in the die member 7<1> to form the second corrugation. A three-section mandrel 9 is expanded to support the tube by a member 10 before the operation. Successive corrugations are formed by suitably modified supporting members and mandrels.
