Abstract

838,984. Making finned tubes for nuclear reactors; forging. FAIREY CO. Ltd., [formerly FAIREY AVIATION CO. Ltd.]. Nov. 24, 1958 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 26866/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of forming external fins on tubular metal stock comprises enclosing a workpiece 10 in an external tubular die 11 whose internal moulding surfaces are formed with a pattern of recesses 12 corresponding to the required fin pattern, and drawing an expander plug 14, whose maximum working diameter is larger than the original bore of the workpiece 10, through the workpiece bore so as to expand its wall and cause the material of the wall to be displaced outwardly at 16 into the recesses 12 of the die 11 to produce the required fin pattern. The workpiece 10 which may be of magnesium beryllium alloy is heated and inserted into the heated die 11 which is in two semi-cylindrical parts clamped together. The plug 14, of frustoconical, spherical or barrel shape, may be vibrated as it is drawn through the workpiece or be jumped through in a series of steps. The fins may be circumferential or helical. The fin pattern may include, Fig. 3, straight radial, longitudinal fins 21 and a number of part-helical fins 22 of lesser height extending between, and rooted at their ends 24 to, adjacent fins 21. Radial extension strips may be riveted to the outer edges of the longitudinal fins 21 to increase their height. The finned tube of Fig. 3 may be inserted into a graphite sleeve, being centralized therein by the fins 21, for heat-exchange purposes in nuclear reactors.
