Abstract
866,554. Making nuclear fuel elements; forging; extruding. A.E.I.-JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Sept. 3, 1959 [Sept. 3, 1958], No. 28331/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Finned canning for nuclear fuel elements is made by pressing a thick hollow cylinder 2 of canning metal by means of one or more surrounding dies 3 having recesses 4 for forming the fins 5. The fins may extend longitudinally, circumferentially or helically of the canning. Longitudinal supporting vanes 6 are formed simultaneously with the fins. In one embodiment the dies 3 are reciprocated radially of the cylinder 2 enclosing a rod of fissile material 1; alternatively the cylinder may be mounted on a mandrel in which case the finned canning is subsequently placed around the fissile material. In another embodiment (not shown) the hollow cylinder surrounded by a stationary annular die or a plurality of dies is expanded by a tapered mandrel to fill the recesses in the dies. The canning may be made of magnesium or aluminium and may be heated or cold.
