Abstract

777,928. Forging.. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 5, 1953], No. 30672/53. Class 83 (4). The outer diameter of tubes and bars or the diameter and wall thickness of tubes, are reduced by swaging in a stationary head-type swager, preferably of the kind described in Specification 777,927, whose die pass is divided longitudinally into two or more sub-passes, each consisting of a die divided radially into two or more segments 1T, 1B, 2T, 2B, the radial dividing planes in adjacent dies being staggered relative to each other, all segments contracting simultaneously to effect the swaging stroke and thereafter being retracted by forward movement of the stock which is fed intermittently being the swaging strokes. Each die may have four die segments 1T, 1L, 1B, 1R, Fig. 1, separated along radial planes such as el, e2. In another embodiment, each die comprises two segments. The workpiece is fed through the machine manually or by screw, chain, pinch rolls or mechanism of the kind described in Specification 777,927. For the swaging of tubes a mandrel may be used, Fig. 5 (not shown). The swaging may be performed hot or cold.
