Abstract

1,106,992. Making finned tubes; forging; extruding. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 23 June, 1965 [23 June, 1964], No. 25892/64. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. Apparatus for forming the outer surface of a tubular body, particularly for the extrusion of external fins, comprises a die housing 1 having a tapered bore containing two or more die segments 5a-5d with tapered outer surfaces which are slidable axially in the bore and have interior surfaces of the profile required for forming the body. The body is of particular use as a nuclear fuel can and is made of an alloy containing 99% magnesium which is pre-heated to 400‹ C. before inserting into the die. The latter consists of four segments 5a- 5d guided by rollers 7. The tubular workpiece is expanded to cause radial flow of metal, by a tapered mandrel 12 which is forced through the bore; the dies are retracted by a flanged rod 13. Electric heating elements are provided in the die housing and a lubricant is used comprising colloidal graphite in methyl alcohol.
