944,949. Extruding; rolling. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 12, 1962 [Nov. 21, 1961], No. 41527/61. Headings B3M and B3P. Apparatus for forming a longitudinallyfinned metal tube comprises a container 1 for receiving a billet 45 to be extruded between an axially movable mandrel 8 and a die 4 into a plain tube, and a series of grooved rolls 15 for forming longitudinal fins on the tube. In the manufacture of a sheath of beryllium for a nuclear fuel element, a pre-heated hollow beryllium billet coated with silver to act as a lubricant, is loaded in the container against a graphite ring 43 resting on the die 4 which is supported from below by a cage 5 and wedge assembly 7 operated by an hydraulic ram 6. The latter is hinged at 33 so as to be detachable from a slot 38 in the wedge assembly. Container 1 is heated by electrothermal braid 44 insulated with glass tape. The die 4, mandrel 8, wedges 27, 28 and their guide plate 31 are coated with graphite by dipping in a suspension of colloidal graphite in water arid they are also polished before use. Mandrel 8 has an integral head 9 which is pressed downwards by an hydraulic ram 46 to extrude the tube and force it between the grooved rolls which are carried by the cage 5.
