Abstract

1328483 Forging pipe ends; extruding R A CREUZET 15 Jan 1971 [22 Jan 1970] 2106/71 Headings B3H and B3P An appartus for shaping the end 31 of a metal pipe 30 comprises a heated die 13 with a tapered bore 15, and a guide block 11 with a cylindrical bore 12 and an external cooling device 25 to ensure the undeformed part of the pipe is not heated. The pipe 30 is pushed into the die 13 by an hydraulic jack and the bore 15 reduces the pipe end diameter and causes the pipe wall to thicken. The movement of the pipe is limited by a plug 21 which may be removed either by hand or automatically, to allow the end of the tube to form a thick walled cylindrical part (48), Fig. 6 (not shown), connected to the pipe (46) by a frusto-conical part (47). A screw-threaded mandrel 51, Fig. 8, may be used during the forming of the cylindrical part. The mandrel is unscrewed to produce a tapped bore (56), Fig. 9 (not shown). The pipe may be lubricated and cold hardened before shaping. The block 11 is preferably cooled by a water pipe and the die is resistance heated.
