Abstract

1,144,617. Shaping tubes. AMP Inc. 17 Nov., 1967 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 52407/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H2] A tube of cold flowable material, e.g. P.V.C. or nylon, is shaped by placing the tube 34 in a cylindrical mould with open ends (comprising the mould parts 15 and 16), inserting a ram into each end of the tube until the rams contact the ends of the tube, inserting another ram longitudinally through one of the rams to define the inside of the shaped tube, and driving the first two rams a predetermined distance towards each other. Ram 21 engages the tube with end 26 and passes into the mould 15, 16 until step 27 makes contact with the mould. The second ram 28 comprises a tapered portion 30, a portion 32 which engages the tube and a portion 33 which engages the mould. A third ram 22 slides inside ram 24 and engages the end of ram 28, thereby defining the inside surface of the tube. Compression of the tube by the first and second rams causes material to flow into the cavities in the outer mould 15, 16 and into the junction of rams 22 and 28. In an alternative embodiment in which a metal tube insert is fixed inside a symmetrical tube, each end ram is hollow, and core rams with rounded ends slide within the rams and hold the metal insert in position during the pressing.
