Abstract

801,158. Making tubular elements; extruding; forging. HUET, A. June 21, 1956 [Aug. 2, 1955], No. 19248/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for forming a bulge g in one side of a metal tube a by axial compression of the tube, comprises a die b<SP>2</SP> having a main cavity for receiving the tube and a transverse opening c into which the wall of the tube is extruded to form the bulge, and wherein the main cavity is enlarged at d in the region where the bulge is to be formed, to a diameter slightly greater than the external diameter of the tube. The enlargement exists between the oblique lines f. After heating to extrusion temperature, the tube is inserted in the die, which is in two parts b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is compressed therein, without the use of a mandrel, by axial forces F applied at the ends of the tube or by clamping jaws h<SP>1</SP>, h<SP>2</SP>. The enlargement d prevents loss of heat in the central portion of the tube and hence facilitates the extrusion of the tube wall into the opening c. During the compression, hot gases may be passed through the opening c to maintain the temperature or the interior of the tube a may be heated.
