Abstract
758,432. Making seamless tubes. HUET, A. Dec. 21, 1951, No. 30005/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging.-A tube is formed with a localized thickening in selected sectors by enlarging the diameter over a section of its length, heating the selected sectors and then deforming the tube to restore the original internal diameter and increase the wall thickness in the heated sectors. A tube b, Fig. 3, with an enlarged diameter portion is heated over the sector AB by blow pipes or electric induction and pressed between dies c, d to form an enlarged portion b1, Fig. 4. The tube may be subsequently re-calibrated internally or a mandrel may be introduced into the tube before it is deformed, the mandrel being cooled or thermally insulated. Alternatively the tube may be cooled internally by circulated air or water to maintain the interior more rigid. Tube bends may be made by bending the tube with the thickened sector on the outside of the bend. Heat exchange elements with multiple bends may be formed from a single tube or from straight tubes connected to short tube bend elements. In a modification tubes are formed with a pair of opposed thickened sectors by heating sectors CF, DE, Fig. 10, and compressing between dies g to form thickened portions h1, h2 and then compressing with further dies H1, H2 to form the final external shape. In another modification tubes heated over sections CF, DE Fig. 12, are formed between opposed dies k, l, the die k having recesses m in which the thickened sector portions n are formed.
