Abstract

649,638. Bending tubes. HUET, A., and COMPAGNIE DES SURCHAUFFEURS. July 1, 1949, No. 17459. Convention date, July 2, 1948. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a method of forming U bends of small radius in metal tubes, a previously formed tube A with a U bend of large radius is shaped by two relatively slidable die blocks 15, 16 over a grooved former 14 conforming to the inner surface of the required bend, the temperature of the tube wall at the inside of the bend being maintained appreciably higher than that of the wall on the outside of the bend. The former 14 is mounted on a bolt 12 between two plates 10, 11 maintained by spacers at a distance apart equal to the outer diameter of the tube and having grooves 20 for slidably carrying the die blocks 15, 16 which are shaped to conform to the outer radius of the bend. One of the blocks only need be slidable in which case the former 14 is also made slidable between the plates. Access for heating the tubes on the inside of the bend by oxyacetylene flame or the like is provided by cut-aways 18, 19 in the former 14 and plates 10, 11 respectively. In bending tubes of relatively large internal diameter the whole of the preformed bend may be heated and the requisite temperature difference obtained by cooling the outside of the bend.
