Abstract

1313974 Making finned-tube heat exchangers HUTOGEPGYAR 11 May 1971 14120/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F4] In a tubular heat exchanger (see Division F4) in which tubes 4 of non-circular cross-section extend through correspondingly shaped apertures in spaced-apart fin-plates, the tubes are secured in the fin-plate apertures solely by a cold pressing operation such as by drawing an oversize mandrel through the tubes when these are assembled with the fin-plates; and in addition, fin elements 2 and lugs 3 are formed from the fin plate material by first cutting notches therein, Fig. 8. After notching, the fin material is pressed out of the plane of the fin to produce the fin elements 2 and/or lugs 3. The notching may be formed by dies such as 6, Fig. 7, which also round-off the fin edges; or the notches may be formed by a rolling or grinding operation (Fig. 9).
