Abstract

1,234,377. Making heat exchangers. OLIN CORP. 23 June, 1969 [2 July, 1968], No. 31530/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F4] A finned heat exchange tube of the crosssection shown in Fig. 3 (or Fig. 3A) is made by placing (in any known manner and as shown in Fig. 1) parallel strips 103, 106, 107 of stop weld material between two sheets of metal (unspecified); hot or cold bonding the sheets together and then slitting the edges providing strip portions 2, 3, 4, 5, Fig. 2. These strip portions are separated, bent outwardly and twisted to form the fins, e.g. 41, 42, 43 on the tube which can have its fluid passageway 20 formed either before or after the fins are bent, by inflating the bonded sheet assembly along the central zone of stop weld material 103. The bending and twisting operations to form the fins may be separate or simultaneous. The heat exchange tube may be bent subsequently into a helix (Figs. 4-7), the method of bending not being described in detail.
