Abstract

544,386. Making tubes. WALDRON, F. B. March 26, 1941, No. 4045. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Casting-machines ; drawing ; forging.-Tubes are made by drawing ferrous metal from a reservoir 12 of molten metal, which may be supplied continuously as described in Specification 543,245, [Group II], through one or more dies 13, 16 and over a mandrel 14, either or both being cooled by circulating water or otherwise. The tube may be cooled at 17 and pulled by travelling electromagnets 21. Any number of dies 16 may be used or these may be replaced by presses. The tube may then be re-heated as by a high-frequency or other furnace 23, drawn at 27, cooled at 28, pulled at 29, and cut off by a travelling saw 35, shears, or acetylene burner. The tube may also be heat treated or flattened into a bar before cutting or heat treated or drawn after. The hot tube may be enclosed in a box 32 filled with a reducing or neutral gas, liquid, or granular material. The thickness of opposite sides of the tube may be regulated by adjusting the heating means 23 to heat one side more than the other or the cooling means 17 when followed by a heater and drawing die, to cool one side more than the other. The cooling fluid is supplied to the central compartment 17 only the compartments 18 serving to catch leakage around the travelling tube.
