Abstract

704,406. Making tubes. OHIO CRANKSHAFT CO. July 26, 1951 [July 29, 1950], No. 17751/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XI] Welding.-A method of manufacturing seamwelded metal pipe from metal strip comprises pre-heating the strip to a temperature sufficient for hot-forming it into a tube but insufficient for welding, electrically heating the longitudinal edges of the pre-heated strip to the welding temperature and then pressure welding the edges to form a longitudinal seam. A metal strip 10 of rectangular cross-section is fed into a preheating furnace 13 by pairs of driving rollers 11 and 12 where it is heated to the forming temperature, e.g. 1500‹ F. for low carbon steel. A photo-electric cell 14 regulates the furnace temperature and the speed of the strip. The pre-heated strip then passes into a high frequency induction type heater 15 (see Group XI) which heats the two longitudinal edges of the strip to welding temperature, e.g. 2400‹ F. for low carbon steel. The heater may be water cooled to reduce its working temperature and the power output of the heater is controlled by a photo-electric cell 20. The strip then passes through a tube forming machine 21 which rolls or shapes the pre-heated strip to the desired tubular shape and presses together the highly heated opposed longitudinal edges to form a welded seam. The pre-heated strips may be formed into a tubular shape with its edges in closely spaced opposed relationship before the edges are heated to the welding temperature and finally welded together. Specification 704,389 is referred to.
