Abstract

PURPOSE: To practice the titled pipe forming method, and to improve the heating efficiency and the skin property of a formed product, by forming a stripe-shaped skelp into a tubular shape, by heating the edges with a plasma-arc just in front of a forge-welding apparatus, and by forge-welding the heated edges while blowing oxygen against the edges.
CONSTITUTION: A stripe-shaped skelp 1 is heated by a heating furnace 2 to hot workable about 800W1,100°C temperature, and is then formed by a forming roll 3 into a tubular shape. The skelp edges 1' are then heated by a plasma-arc heating device 6 to nearly forge-weldale about ≥1,250°C temperature; oxygen gas is then blown from an oxygen nozzle 8 against the edges 1' in order to adjust their temperature and to clean the edges 1'; the edges 1' are then forge-welded by the forge- welding rolls 5, 5' and a steel pipe is finished. According to the present method, the amount of generated scales is greatly reduced, the skin property is improved and the unit fuel consumption is also greatly reduced.
