Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure the rise in the temperature of an edge section up to a required point by controlling the distance between an oxygen nozzle and the edge section according to the temperature of the skelp edge section measured immediately before being blown by oxygen in wolding steel pipes.
CONSTITUTION: A section requiring no welding on a band-shaped skelp 2 is heated up to to 900W1,200°C in a heating furnace 1 to form an edge section 2' into a tubula r shape. The edge section 2' thus tubularly formed is heated up to 1,050W1,250°C immediately before reaching an exygen blowing position. Then, this band-shaped skelp 2 is formed into a tube. The temperature of the skelp 4 thus formed is measured with a thermometer 6. The distance between the end of an oxygen nozzle 7 and an edge section 4' on the skelp 4 is controlled by a moving device such as jack according to the temperature thus measured. Oxygen is blown against the edge section 4' from the nozzle 7 to raise the temperature above 1,390°C. Then, the edge section 4' is welded by a welding roll 8. In this manner, the production of scale and the required amount of fuel are reduced, while the quality of the surface of the products is imporved.
