1,017,318. Coiling helically jointed tubes; welding by pressure. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. May 7, 1964 [July 23, 1963], No. 18994/64. Headings B3E and B3R. A method of making a helically coiled tube from sheetmetal strip in which the edge of the first coil and the coil being formed are butt-welded after heating and wherein the strip having straight edges is fed to the coiling machine in a direction parallel with the coiling axis is characterized in that the strip is subjected to a first and second coiling stage to form the tube the abutting edges of which are welded. Strip t is fed horizontally between rollers 7 and slideway 8 to a first coiling station II comprising support rollers 13, 16, frustoconical vertically disposed bending rollers 15, and a bending plate 17 to produce an initial angle x with the strip feed axis A-A. The strip then passes via a guide plate 26 to a second station III comprising an edge roller 22 which biases the strip in an axial direction against the edge of the previously formed coil, a support roller 23, a bending plate 24 and bending rollers 25 to a final coiling angle. The strip edges are heated to white heat by high-frequency electrodes along the edges so that they weld together at the abutment point. A grooved roller 27 mounted on a fork pivotally mounted on the bed 20a maintains the edges to be welded in contact. Alternatively, a pair of inclined conical rollers, Fig. 10 (not shown), may be used. The plates 17, 26 may be replaced by guide blocks or rollers or combinations thereof.
