Abstract
953,842. Bending; welding by pressure. ABBEY ETNA MACHINE CO. Feb. 18, 1963 [Dec. 3, 1962], No. 6516/63. Headings B3E and B3R. Apparatus for forming metal strip into a partial tube, which is then seam welded, and effecting the final forming by a series of spaced fin rolls adjacent the welder includes a series of sets of rollers along which the edges of the partial tube travel, each set of rollers occupying substantially the whole of the space between adjacent fin rolls and/or the final fin roll and the welding position and the arrangement being such that the rollers contain the edges of the partial tube and prevent distortion thereof during the final forming. The final forming of partially formed tube T is effected by three fin rolls F, the tube then advancing to a welding station to weld the free edge E together. Between adjacent fin rolls F and, if necessary, between the end fin roll F and the welding station, the edges E are prevented from buckling by their engagement with sets of rollers 23 supported by a carriage vertically adjustable in a frame 14 for different diameter tubes and angularly adjustable to conform to the inclination of the advancing tube.
