Abstract
1,155,884. Continuous casting-machines; welding by pressure; flanging; seaming; making ingots. KAWASAKI STEEL CORP. 12 Sept., 1966 [1 Oct., 1965], No. 40678/66. Headings B3A, B3E, B3F, B3J and B3R. A process for continuously casting molten steel comprises continually forming a hollow tubular case 5 from steel strips 3, 4 and pouring the molten steel into the case as it is moved vertically downwards, the corner joints between the strips being formed into overlapping flanges and sealed by welding, or by mechanically interlocking the flanges with tags, staples, rivets, grooves, or a continuous sealing strip (Figs. 20-29, not shown) A guide member 17, which may be internally water cooled and through which the molten steel is poured, deflects the steel strips 3, 4 round rolls 16, 21 which also start to form edge flanges 23, further rolls 25, 26 completing the overlapping flanges. In the preferred embodiment seam welders 41 are provided at each corner and rotary, air cylinder urged, electrodes clamp and weld the flanges of the case. The case is water cooled by sprays from pipes 8 and supported by rollers 7, 8 as it moves downwards. The case and casting are withdrawn in synchronism, possibly by a single mechanism and the case may be removed from the casting or left on as required. The speed of withdrawal is related to the thickness of the case 5 and the length of the longest side of the cross-section to produce maximum productivity consistent with maintaining the structural integrity of the case.
