Abstract

1,211,692. Making pre-stressed pressure vessels; welding by fusion. STRUTHERS SCIENTIFIC & INTERNATIONAL CORP. 22 Nov., 1967 [24 Nov., 1966; 20 Jan., 1967], Nos. 52653/66 and 3178/67. Headings B3A and B3R. A method of making a pre-stressed thickwalled pressure vessel, having a wall thickness at least 16% of its inside diameter, the wall being a curved closing wall of an integral layer of material, includes the step of bending the wall to change its curvature and thereby pre-stress it to resist higher pressures. A cylinder 40, prestressed to resist internal pressure is made with a gap 41 which is closed by hydraulic rams 43 while the cylinder rests on supports 42. When the gap is closed a trench 44 remains in which a first welding pass 45 is made. A chill bar 46 is then used to keep the weld cool while the remaining weld passes 48 are made. A cylinder prestressed to resist external pressure is made by forming halves 61 and 62, the angle subtended by the outer wall of each half being 189 degrees. The halves are assembled and external pressure is applied to bring the meeting surfaces into contact, Fig. 17, before welding. The change in curvature necessary to apply the required prestress is 0À5% for steel and the effect is to produce approximately uniform circumferential stress throughout the thickness of the wall. A helically seamed cylinder may be made either by winding a strip of material on to a mandrel or by machining a helical slot along a tube. The edges of the gap are closed by twisting the tube before it is welded.
