Abstract
1,212,773. Rolling; extruding. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Ltd. 24 Oct., 1968 [3 Jan., 1968], No. 50607/68. Headings B3M and B3P. A method of cold working a metal tube 11 to form a flange F comprises subjecting an end of the tube to multiaxial compressive stresses which progressively lengthen its periphery and reduce its thickness while forming the flange in the absence of tensile stress. Both ends of a can may be flanged by rotating the can with a support 15 and a die 17 and extruding the end to be flanged between the die and balls 26 mounted adjustably in a stationary, divided carrier 22. The die 17 and support 15 may be mounted in the chuck and tailstock of a lathe and the carrier 22 in the cross-slide. The balls may be replaced by rolls (35) or one or more stationary surfaces (41), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), and the can may have a welded, soldered or glued seam.
