Abstract
804,592. Making heat-exchanger tubes. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS, Ltd., J. Nov. 24, 1954 [May 26, 1954], No. 15587/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] A method of making a composite tube 1 for a heat-exchanger comprises fitting around an inner tube 2 a helical wall 3 of heat conducting material with the convolutions spaced apart, locating an outer tube 4 over the helical wall and either expanding the inner tube 2 or drawing down the outer tube 4 to seal the wall 3 against the two tubes. In the form shown the wall 3 comprises a metal strip, one end of which is welded in position before the strip is wound on to the inner tube. The inner tube may be ultimately expanded either by driving or drawing a mandrel through it or by an applied internal pressure generated mechanically, hydraulically or physically by freezing water contained therein. In alternative constructions described the strip 3 is resistancewelded or soldered to both tubes or the helical passage within the composite tube may be formed by cutting a spiral groove in one or other of the tubes 2, 4 or in a metallic sheath drawn over the inner tube. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 703,081, [Group XIII], and 728,131.
