Abstract

1,160,761. Welding by pressure; jointing by tube expanding; dividing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 May, 1967 [3 June, 1966], No. 24855/66. Headings B3J, B3R, B3Q and B3W. [Also in Division F3] An explosive device for expanding and welding metal tubes into concentric apertures, e.g. tube-plates for heat exchangers, condensers or boilers comprises a body 11 of explosionpressure transmitting material, e.g. elastomeric material such as polyethylene provided with an axial bore 13 for accommodating the whole of the end of a detonator casing 16 containing explosive changes 17, and a sleeve member 15 slidable on the body 11 so as to surround but be spaced from any portion of the detonator casing extending beyond the bore 13 when the sleeve is positioned on the body member, a groove 14 being provided in the body 11 to permit electrical wires 18 to be led from the detonator. Additional explosive may be contained in the bore 13. The device is inserted into the end of a tube 19 which is to be expanded into an aperture 20 in a tube plate 21 such that the body 11 extends over a frustoconical portion 22 of the aperture but stops short of the internal face 23 of the plate 21. The sleeve 15 is a sliding fit in the tube 19. When the detonator is fired by the passage of a current through the wires 18 that portion of the tube 19 surrounding the body 11 is expanded and, if sufficient explosive is used, becomes welded to the tube-plate 21 at the frustoconical portion 22. That portion of the tube 19 extending beyond the body member 11 may be completely severed by the explosion, or may be subsequently trimmed.
