Abstract

930,214. Making composite tubes. CAMPBELL, GIFFORD & MORTON Ltd. April 26, 1962 [Jan. 30, 1961], No. 3529/61. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A method of making composite metal tubing comprises forming a metal or alloy strip 10, e.g. mild or stainless steel into a close helical winding and seam welding together the adjacent edges of succeeding turns of the winding at 11 to form an inner tubular layer and similarly forming around and upon said layer a second close helically wound and welded strip 12 of a different metal or alloy to form an outer tubular layer in contact with the inner layer. Finally, the tube is given a single cold pass in a rolling mill to pressure weld the contacting faces of the layers 10, 12 together. Additional layers of the same or different metals may be added and wound in the same or opposite directions. The strip may be wound under tension and the outside diameter of the inner welded layer and the strip metal for the outer layer slot blasted or pickled.
