Abstract

1,184,380. Winding spirals. MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K.K. 11 Sept., 1967 [27 Sept., 1966], No. 41433/67. Heading B3E. [Also in Division F2] A tubular member comprises a hollow core member on to which is wound a strip of metal, having a thickness greater than 5 mm. and a previously curved configuration of which the radius of curvature in the free state was approximately equal to the radius of the tubular member, the strip being tightly spirally wound in a plurality of superjacent layers and being closely encircled by an outer cover member. A metal strip 12 mm. thick and 1800 mm. wide is drawn from a coil (not shown) which has a radius approximately the same as the coil to be formed. The strip passes between rollers 4<SP>1</SP> and is pressed by a roller 4 against the hollow core 1 on which the coil is to be wound. The rollers 4<SP>1</SP> are adjustable and are positioned so that they bend the strip 2 to a radius of curvature slightly greater than that which it will have when on the core. Slipping of the turns on the core is prevented by friction or by tack welding the layers together when they leave the winding station. Steering of the strip to maintain the edges in alignment is effected by the roller 4 which is mounted so that the pressure exerted by the roller can be varied along its length. The leading end 2a of the strip is tapered so that there is no gap between the first and second turns and the trailing end 2b is similarly tapered so that it closely conforms to the inside surface of the outer ring 5. This ring is made in halves which are welded together. After fabrication, holes 7 are formed through the outer ring and the wound layers to receive thermometers which indicate the temperature of the interior during heat treatment. Inert gas circulates between the coils during the heat treatment. The holes 7 are subsequently plugged. Two or more sections are joined end-to-end by automatic welding to form a chemical treatment vessel, or a closure plate is welded to the ends.
