1,249,574. Making springs and packing rings; stamping; coiling helices. FLUOROCARBON CO. 11 July, 1969 [20 Nov., 1968], No. 35123/69. Headings B3A, B3E and B3Q. [Also in Division F2] The loading spring B for a sealing ring, Fig. 1, is made by helically-winding a steel strip into a tubular structure in which the edge margins of successive convolutions are in overlapped relation, Fig. 3, forming the tubular structure into a ring and then deforming the wall of the ring into a channel cross-section, Fig. 11. As shown in Fig. 3, the steel strip 22 is thinned at its leading edge 24 as it is carried around a hub 26<SP>1</SP> towards a mandrel 32 upon which it is wound. The tube 23 so formed is heat-treated before being removed from the mandrel and cut to the required length, the ends of the tube then being inserted one within the other to form a ring. The helically-wound ring is then placed in a die 37, Fig. 11, and pressed into a U-section shape, the overlapping ends of the ring then being spot-welded. The loading spring so formed may be provided with a coating of plastics or lead applied directly to the surface before or after the winding operation; alternatively a sealing jacket A of, for example, P.T.F.E., may be separately formed and assembled with the loading spring B to provide a composite sealing ring, such jacket being moulded from a channel-section, Fig. 14 (not shown), which is placed together with the loading spring within a mould and heated.
