Abstract
749,427. Making piston-rings; coiling; rolling. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. Nov. 8, 1954, No. 32253/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Piston-rings of tapered cross-section are made by winding red-hot wire 4, Fig. 5, into a helical groove 2 formed in a cold or cooled mandrel 1 and having a tapered section accurately corresponding to the cross-section required for the piston-ring and applying pressure to the wire, simultaneously with the winding, by a pressure roller 5 which compresses the wire completely into the groove and has a peripheral shape that coacts with the groove 2 to close it at the pressure point and complete the required crosssectional perimeter of the wire. To ensure alignment between the mandrel and the roller the latter has a locating flange 7 which fits and runs in an unoccupied turn of the groove 2 during operation. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flange 7 is omitted and the roller 5 has lateral cylindrical parts 8 which run on the exterior of the mandrel and a central tapered portion 9 which fits accurately into the groove 2. Piston rings of one or more convolutions are cut from the completed helical coil. Specifications 535,496 and 706,078 are referred to.
