Abstract

839,373. Expansion joints. FLEXONICS CORPORATION. July 2, 1956, No. 20449/56. Class 99(1). An expansion joint, Figs. 11 and 12, comprises an expander body 54 of a plurality of laminations and an adapter member 68 telescopically associated with the expander body having a wall thickness not substantially exceeding three times the composite wall thickness of the expander body the adapter member being welded to the expander body. In Fig. 13, the adapter member is indicated by 84. The weld may be a resistance weld formed by means of a pair of welding rollers. As shown split rings 76, 78 may be applied to the joint so as to ensure controlled flexing of-the expander body. These rings however may be omitted. The expander body is made up from tubes formed from sheet metal bent into tubular form and welded along a longitudinal joint. One such tube may be expanded by drawing an expanding member through it and then another tube which has not been expanded can be fitted within the expanded tube. The expanding member may then be drawn through the inner tube and another tube of the original size fitted. In this way a laminated wall of a desired number of laminations, within limits, may be fabricated. If a corrosive fluid is to be conducted the innermost wall may be of a metal resistant to the corrosive action of the fluid and the other laminations may be selected with a view toward radiation and conduction of heat.
