837,213. Making finned tubes. BIRMETALS Ltd. Oct. 30, 1957 [Oct. 30, 1956], No. 33054/56. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A tube b having integral longitudinal fins thereon, particularly for a heat-exchanger, is formed by extrusion, the fins being subsequently sub-divided into elements a which are displaced by bending (Fig. 1) or twisting (Fig. 4) or by a combination of these operations to expose at least a part of the additional surfaces thereof formed on division. Fins formed according to the invention may be provided on both inner and outer surfaces of a tube or on one of these surfaces the other surface being plain or formed with longitudinal or circumferential fins. The elements a are preferably formed by shearing the fins of the extruded tube section and the shearing tools may be adapted to effect also the required displacement of the individual elements.
