Abstract

521,259. Heat-treating metal tubing. ARMSTRONG, J. J. V. (American Rolling Mill Co:). Nov. 10, 1938, No. 32642. [Class 72] In the manufacture of tube from strip steel in which the latter is formed into a tube while the strip and the latter move longitudinally and wherein the tube is heated to above the transformation temperature of 1670‹F. to unite the juxtapositioned parts of the strip, the moving tube is cooled rapidly down to the upper transformation point, then slowly from that temperature to the lower tranformation temperature of 1330‹F. so as to convert the austenite to a dispersion of cementite in alpha iron. The tubing may then be cooled slowly down to 1000‹F. or less or may be cooled rapidly from this temperature down to 700‹F. at which it may be maintained for ageing before being cooled to room temperature. The tube formed from two strips 1, 2 by rollers 9 passes through a tube 20 containing non-oxidising or reducing gases fed in by a pipe 21 and is heated by electrodes 12, 13 and 14 for the purpose of uniting the outer and inner parts formed by the strips with sealing metal. The tube is then fed by rollers 25 through a water-jacketed pipe 27 through which water is circulated and into the interior of which is fed cooling gas by a pipe 30, the gas leaving by the pipe 31. The tube then passes through another cooling zone similar to the first and separated therefrom by partitions 32. The tube passes through a second cooling zone comprising a chamber 41 having radiating fins 42 and then through a chamber 43 into which molten metal such as lead or a lead and tin alloy is introduced by a pipe 44 and discharged by pipes 45, 46. The tube then passes through a wiper 47 and is then finally cooled in air or'by a water spray 48. In a modification, the chamber 41 may be dispensed with and the chamber 43 lengthened and also a second chamber containing molten metal similar to chamber 43 may be provided to cool the tube still further before it passes through the.wiper 47.
