Abstract
1,247,352. Heat treatment of aluminium alloys. ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Nov.28, 1968 [Dec. 5, 1967], No. 56626/68. Heading C7N. An article fabricated of a heat-treatable Al alloy and of indeterminate length is heat-treated by: (a) advancing the article through the heating region of a heating furnace so that any given point on the article has a dwell in the heating region of not more than two minutes, exposing the article in said region to a heated fluid above the temperature to be attained by the article, the final temperature of the article causing complete solid solution of hardeners in the alloy, and (b) quenching the article in a quenching medium as soon as it leaves the heating zone. The heating and cooling fluids are usually gases but liquids are used. If alloy strip is the article to be treated it should preferably not exceed a gauge of 2À5 mm. Alloys suitable for treatment in accordance with the invention include Al-Mg-Zn, alloys with Mg 2 Si and Al clad alloys. Typically strip is fed under low continuous tension through a heating zone of 3-14 metres in length, and heating and cooling are effected by directing jets of heated and cooled gas respectively on to the surface of the strip so that the strip in effect floats on these jets. One or more heating zones may be provided before the quenching zone.
