Abstract
759,019. Making tubular fittings. HUET, A. March 19, 1953 [March 28, 1952; April 21, 1952], No. 7612/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging; flanging.-A method of producing a nipple or branch opening in a metal tube bend by forging the heated bend is characterized in that the forging operations comprise only compressions of metal in order not to effect any ultimate thinning of the tube wall. A tube a bent to hair-pin shape is heated on the bend, the top of which is then flattened by compressing it in the direction of arrow A. The flattening forms two shoulders C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> on the sides of the bend. At the point where it is desired to form the nipple a longitudinal slit H, I is cut in the flattened portion of the bend the length of said slit being equal to half the inside circumference of the nipple. The slit is opened by compression of the shoulders C<SP>1</SP> and C2 by dies d<SP>1</SP> and d<SP>2</SP> which at the same time forms the sides f of the aperture and the rim g of the nipple. A mandrel (not shown) may be used to accurately form the aperture of the nipple if necessary. Only a part of the top of the bend may be flattened in which case, the flattening pressure is counteracted by dies h<SP>1</SP> and h<SP>2</SP> (Fig. 7). A nipple having lips thicker than the wall of the bend or having an aperture greater than the diameter of the tube may be formed by increasing the compression in direction of arrow A thus increasing the thickness of metal in the region of the flattening. Alternatively the bend of the tube may initially be formed with a bulge which is then flattened. A second slit, crossing the first and of smaller length may be cut in the flattened bend to facilitate shaping of the nipple.
