773,934. Making pipe fittings. HUET, A. Aug. 16, 1955 [Nov. 5, 1954], No. 23572/55. Addition to 759,019. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging.-In a modification or improvement of the method of manufacturing a branch aperture or nipple on a bent tube as disclosed in the parent Specification, the bent tube a has oblique or divergent limbs which offer the advantage of giving an increased passage section in the bent region where such passage is ogival in shape. The tube is slit along a straight line C, D in the region it is desired to obtain the branch aperture and the bent region is then heated and compressed between dies d<SP>1</SP> and d2 which apply a compression in the direction of the slit which opens during the compression, while the wall of the tube is driven back to form the lip g of the nipple. A mandrel k is introduced into the slit during the compression to calibrate the lip g and is applied against the bottom wall E of the bend which is supported in a fixed abutment l. To increase the height of the lip the mandrel is forced against the wall region E, thus reducing the increased wall thickness at this point and displacing metal towards the opening. This operation of driving metal back from the region E may take place before or after the dies d<SP>1</SP> and d<SP>2</SP> effect the compression. Finally, the divergent limbs of the bend a<SP>1</SP> provided with the branch aperture may be brought parallel to one another.
