Abstract
803,506. Making pipe fittings; forging; extruding. HUET, A. March 12, 1957 [March 19, 1956], No. 8113/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A socket b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 5, is formed in a wall a for the reception of a tube h, by piercing an opening d, Fig. 1, in the wall by means of a punch or the like and thereby displacing the wall material to form a tubular nipple b on one side thereof, and then introducing a punch f, Fig. 4, into the nipple from its outer end to extrude further material from around the opening and thereby form a tubular nipple b<SP>2</SP> on the other side of the wall. The latter may be a flat or curved metal plate such as a header or tube plate of a heat exchanger. The various operations are preferably performed with the plate heated. An outer die g, Fig. 4, is used for shaping the nipple b<SP>2</SP>; an outer die may also be used for shaping the nipple b. After piercing the opening, the bore of the nipple is flared out, Fig. 2 (not shown), preferably by a round bar inserted in the opening and used as a roller. The tube h, Fig. 5, may be secured into the socket by shrinking and/or welding i. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the tube h is smaller than the bore of the socket and the ends thereof are contracted on to the tube and welded thereto.
