Stamping; bending. -Process for making tubes and tubular containers by bending a metal sheet and welding or otherwise connecting the adjoining edges is characterized in that the bending is effected by repeatedly pressing the sheet metal into a semi-cylindrical die proceeding longitudinally from one end of the metal sheet towards the other in the direction of the tube axis. The sheet metal 1 is bent progressively as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 to tubular form by means of a semi-ovoidal shaping die 13 which co-operates with a wooden die 12 supported between girders 10, 11, the die 13 being movable longitudinally beneath a girder 9 attached to the girders 10 and 11 at each end. Alternatively the shaping die 13 may be in the form of a wheel or ball. The edges of the tube may be welded or joined by means of a deformable tubular member 14, e.g. of soft iron or copper, arranged between up-turned edges 2a of the tube and enclosed by a fish-plate 15. The member 14 is deformed by fluid pressure to form a fluid-tight seal as shown in Fig. 8. Finally the tube ends are closed by plugs 4 and 5 held together by a tie-rod 6 and fluid-pressure is passed into the tube to shape it against a die 8. This also tests the tightness of the longitudinal seam.
