Abstract

569,934. Drawing. HEAD, WRIGHTSON, & CO., Ltd., WRIGHTSON, SIR T. G., and LAKE, N. C. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18705. [Class 83 (iv)] To save waste due to the formation of tag ends on tubes to be drawn, the tubes are gripped on the entering side of the die D by a number of grippers 1, shaped to fit the tube and wedge shaped at 3 to engage a carriage 4 by which the tube is forced into and through the die. Crushing of the tube is prevented by a well-lubricated enlargement 6 of the mandrel 5 the operative end 5<1> of which extends into the die. When enough of the tube has been forced through it is gripped by the draw-bench jaws J in connection with an internal support 8, and the jaws 1, 2 are released. In a modification the support 8 is dispensed with and a plain mandrel of the diameter of the part 5<1> is pulled through the die with the tube. The gripping-jaws may be operated as described in Specification 567,662.
