Abstract
606,306. Drawing. HEAD, WRIGHTSON, & CO., Ltd., WRIGHTSON, Sir T. G., and LAKE, N. C. Jan. 11, 1946, No. 1095. [Class 83 (iv)] In a method of forming a tube with a thickened end, the end of the tube is pushed through a drawing die without internal support and a mandrel is then inserted in the tube and the succeeding portion is drawn between the die and mandrel, the leading thickened end being' retained as part of the finished tube. In one example of the method, one end of a tube is pushed through a die 3 to form a reduced end as shown in Fig. 3. A mandrel 4 having a reduced end 4a to facilitate its insertion is pushed into the tube, the remainder of which is drawn between the die and mandrel, leaving, if desired, an undrawn larger portion at the other end. The tube may be pulled back through the die by placing in a groove 5 of the mandrel, a split-ring having an external diameter equal to that of the drawn portion of the tube. The undrawn end may then be thickened by being pushed through the die. Alternatively, the whole of the remainder of the tube may be drawn, a larger die but the same mandrel being used for the end, thus forming a length of tube as shown in Fig. 11. By thus using different dies, various forms of thickened end portions may be produced. The invention is applicable to tubes of round or other section. Specification 578,076 is referred to.
