Abstract
1406260 Extruding KOBE STEEL Ltd 18 ug 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 38591/72 Heading B3P A tube with a non-circular bore or an inwardly finned bore is made by hydrostatically extruding a tubular billet 6 through a die 2 using a mandrel 5 which is provided with a frustoconical or conical end tip 11, and a grooved or non-circular portion 13, 14. The grooves may be longitudinal or helical. The mandrel is supported by a flange 4 on a sleeve 3 to prevent axial movement and both the sleeve and flange have holes 8, 9 for the flow of hydrostatic fluid. The fluid is pressurized in the chamber 1 by a plunger (not shown). The maximum diameter "d" of the tip 11 is smaller than the diameter defined by the groove bottoms. The tubular billet has a tapered tip (17), Fig. 8 (not shown), before extrusion to sit against the die 2. The extruded tube may have a square bore, a rectangular cross-section or internal and external fins, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). The billet may be aluminium. The mandrel may be prevented from rotation by being keyed at its rear end in a sleeve, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown).
