Abstract

1,172,876. Drawing tubes. HOESCH A.G. 20 March, 1967, No. 13046/67. Heading B3P. A method of cold-drawing hollow metal sections wherein the section 1 is reduced in outside diameter and wall thickness in a single operation comprises at least two successive stages, each consisting of a die and a mandrel and in each of which the exterior and interior walls of the section are lubricated via spaces delimited by an entry plate 101 with a conical entry portion, the dies 2a and 2b, a mandrel rod connection member 103, the mandrels 6a and 6b and the tube wall, and in which a low pressure lubrication is provided for the first mandrel and drawing die and a high pressure lubrication for all further stages. The mandrels 6a and 6b are clamped by a nut 5 on a mandrel rod 4, the mandrels being separated by a distance piece 7. Each mandrel has an entry section 13a, 13b of increasing cross-section followed by a section 15a, 15b of decreasing cross-section merging into a lubrication groove 14a, 14b, and a cylindrical portion 16a, 16b. A duct 8 through the mandrel rod has radial bores 9a, 9b and 9c connecting with external annular grooves and with radial bores 11a, 11b and lie which lead to the spaces 12a, 12b and 12c. The dies 2a and 2b have a tapered entry section leading to an exit section having a slower taper. The relative axial positions of the die and mandrel are such that the section is first reduced in diameter and then the wall thickness is reduced. Between the dies an external chamber 3 is formed. High pressure lubricating fluid is supplied to the chamber 3 and to the spaces 12a, 12b and 12c. A further lubricant chamber 102 is formed between the entry plate 101 and the die 2a, this space being supplied with low pressure lubricant. A space 104 inside the section is supplied with low pressure lubricant through a tube surrounding the mandrel rod and a bore 106. Either or both of the mandrels may float on the mandrel rod.
