761,143. Pipe-end closing; making gas bottles. WEISSE, E. Nov. 17, 1953 [Dec. 19, 1952], No. 31834/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] In the manufacture of metal containers and bottles for storing compressed gas, a metal tube 3 has its end reduced by heating the end of the tube above the recrystallization temperature whilst it is being pressed in a heated die 1 and simultaneously cooling the mouth of the die and the adjacent part of the tube. The tube may be of aluminium and its end may be heated to 400‹ C. in the die which has electrical or gas-heating means 2 and is secured to the moving platen of a press. The tube end may in addition be heated separately and independently of the heated die. The adjacent part of the tube is cooled by water sprayed from an annular pipe 5. Alternatively or in addition the tube may be filled with water up to a fixed level which is maintained constant or it may vary according to the movement of the die 1. A neck portion 4 may be formed in one or more operations; the thickness of the metal in this portion will be increased in dependence upon the friction between the tube and the die which may be lubricated with colloidal graphite. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, jaws 8a actuated by wedge-cams 8 swage the metal of the tube into an annular groove in a collar 6. The tube and collar may subsequently be welded together externally. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the end of the neck has screw threads 15 formed internally or externally thereon for engagement with a screw-threaded collar 6. The edge of the tube metal is sharpened to about 50 degrees and is deformed by engagement with the wedgeshaped end 16 of an annular groove in the collar, which end has an angle of about 60 degrees to effect a gas-tight seal. To prevent loosening of the collar a spot or short seam weld 14 may be provided. Lugs 10 for a bail 11 are provided on the collar. Other embodiments are described for closing the other end of the gas bottle to hemispherical or ellipsoidal form and for providing a collar in the partspherical end. Re-inforcing rings 12, Fig. 8 (not shown), may be provided internally or externally of the bottle.
