Abstract
699,163. Extruding. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 7, 1951. [Dec. 8, 1950], No. 28775/51. Class 83 (iv). In a method of extruding from solid billets in a press in which the receiver is exhausted of air, the open end of the receiver is sealed in an air-tight manner by a metal disc after the introduction of the billet and the disc and billet are pressed by the ram after the air has been exhausted. In a press for extruding an aluminium or aluminium alloy cable sheath the receiver 11, Fig. 2, for a heated billet 12 has a flared end 15 in which a frusto-conical disc 18 of the same material as the billet is seated. An annular recess 16 connected to an exhaustion duct 17 permits removal of air from the receiver before the ram 19 descends and the disc is finally forced past the recess to completely seal the receiver during extrusion and may be finally extruded as part of the cable sheath. The lower end of the receiver is sealed by residue metal 13 remaining from the preceding pressing operation. The solid metal disc 15 may be replaced by a thin sheet metal disc with an upwardly flanged edge, molten metal being poured on to the receiver and the ram being lowered before the metal solidifies. In a modification adapted for use in a receiver having no exhaustion duct, a suction head 20, Fig. 5, having a seating 21 for the disc 15 and an annular recess 22 and exhaust duct 23 is attached to the open end of the receiver using a heat-resistant annular seal 24 of asbestos or aluminium. The head 20 may be readily. detachable as by a flange 25 which is inserted into a retaining pocket 26 secured on the receiver by a quick-release means, the head 20 being shifted by mechanical or hydraulic means.
