Class 42 (1) An opening in a hollow body member of fusible plastic material is sealed with a closure -member of like material of a size and shape such that the adjacent parts of the closure member and the walls surrounding the opening in the body member are spaced apart so as to form a groove therebetween, by supporting the body member to maintain its shape, with the closure member disposed in the opening, and applying heat and pressure to adjacent portions of the members while maintaining the shape of the body member to effect fusing of the said portions and to direct the fused material into the groove. As shown, the body member 1 is in the form of a bottle, having a neck portion 4, the opposite end being open and having a thickened flange 6 providing an internal shoulder 10 and an external shoulder 11. The closure member 5 seats on the flange 10 and has an annular flange 18 which is spaced from the flange 6 by groove 20 ; the outer portions of both flanges are tapered to form thin lips. The body member is supported in a sleeve-like member 25, the shoulder 11 seating against a shoulder 30 in the said member, and a heating and pressing head 31, having a substantially flat lower face 32 with an annular rib 33, having sloping sides and a flat lower face, is pressed down by an actuating cylinder (not shown) to fuse the exposed lips of the body and closure members, and direct the fused material into the groove 20.
