Abstract

800,470. Making nuclear fuel elements; extruding sheaths. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA, Ltd. Jan. 3, 1957 [Jan. 20, 1956], No. 308/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A clad fuel element for use in a nuclear reactor is made by extruding a sheath of aluminium 2 directly on to a bar of fissile fuel 1. The fuel may be uranium, enriched uranium or thorium and is preferably initially plated with nickel; a copper flash may also be applied above the nickel. The plated bar is initially heated in an inert atmosphere to 100 to 200‹ C. Two aluminium billets heated to 500‹ C. are placed in a press body 3, Fig. 3, having external grooves 14 for receiving heating coils, and pressed by rams 4, which may be operated by a vertical hydraulic press, through passages 5, 6 and orifices 7, Fig. 4, in an extrusion die 9. The extrusion of aluminium is begun before the fissile bar 1 is fed through the die channel 8 and is continued after the bar has passed therethrough whereby solid portions 12 of aluminium are formed at both ends of the bar. Separate successive lengths of bar 1 may be fed through the press so as to form a continuous length of extruded aluminium with separate fissile bars enclosed therein which are subsequently severed into individual clad fuel elements.
