Abstract
1369048 Producing fibre-reinforced material; drawing G RAU 30 Nov 1971 [2 Dec 1970] 55633/71 Headings B3A and B3P [Also in Division E1] A method of producing a shaped element of fibre-reinforced material comprising a plurality of aligned fibres embedded in a matrix comprises the steps of inserting a wire into a jacket of a matrix material, subjecting the jacket to mechanical working to reduce the cross-sectional area, arranging a plurality of such jacketed wires in a bundle, and subjecting the bundle to further mechanical working to reduce the crosssectional areas of the wires and jackets and to cause bonding together of the jackets to form an homogeneous matrix. The bonded wires and jackets, which preferably are made of metallic materials, may be enclosed in an outer casing of the matrix material and may also be provided with an inner core of said material. In an example, a copper-coated alloy steel 3, Fig. 1, is embedded in a pure silver matrix 4 and subsequently the individual jacketed wires 2 are drawn down to fit into a thin-walled silver casing 1, the resulting element being drawn down further as required. In an alternative embodiment, jacketed wires of steel 2, Fig. 9, of square cross-section, and a silver sheet 5 are arranged in a rectangular tube 1 of silver which is drawn through stepwise reducing dies to form the shaped element. The wires may be arranged in various ways in the matrix material, e.g. parallel to each other, helically disposed, and cylindrical, rectangular and other cross-sectional shapes of elements may be produced.
