Abstract

1443035 Fibre-reinforced metal sections; welding by pressure FELTEN & GUILLEAUME CARLSWERK AG 17 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972 22 March 1973] 38936/73 Headings B3A and B3R A method of producing fibre-reinforced metal sections comprises assembling fibre bundles consisting of reinforcing filaments which are either stranded with wires of the matrix material or coated with matrix material or continuous metal wires which are reinforced with short fibres in parallel configuration, and welding the bundles or reinforced wires together by compression welding in a compression die, the cross-sectional shape of the metal sections being formed by the compression die. Heat is applied to the compression die and the bundles or wires may be drawn off from reels and combined into ropes or cables using a guide capstan and/or the die. A shaped core may be disposed in the die for the production of tubular sections. The fibres may comprise B, C, SiC, Al 2 O 3 , metals, ceramics and a mixture of these materials. The reinforced metal wires may be formed by stranding thin wires of matrix material with reinforcing filaments to form ropes, the matrix material comprising thin wires of Cu, Al, Ni, Ti or alloys of these materials. The filaments comprise W, W coated with B and/or SiC, steel, ceramics or C coated with B. The fibre volume of the section is between 10 and 70%. The fibre bundles may be metal coated.
