Abstract
1401936 Superconductor MRCO Inc 28 Aug 1973 [6 Sept 1972] 40531/73 Heading H1K A solid superconductor comprises a twisted plurality of mated segments each segment consisting of a twisted matrix of normally conductive material and a plurality of filaments of superconductive material each filament occupying positions near both the surface and the interior of the segment and having a varied radial position in the longitudinal direction of the superconductor. In the embodiment rods of Nb-Ti alloy are inserted into a copper billet and the billet worked to give a thin composite. The composite is twisted to give half to five turns per linear inch, rolled to give a square wire and coated with silver-tin solder. Four coated square wires are brought together through a tapered die and heated to bond the wires by means of the solder. Alternatively the wires may be bonded ultrasonically. The joined wires are twisted to give half to five turns per linear inch. The joined wires may be drawn before twisting. In an alternative embodiment copper billet is worked to give a wire of circular crosssection which is twisted and then shaped to give a cross-section which is the segment of a circle. From 3 to 36 segments are joined to give a wire of circular cross-section which is twisted.
